Sharing. Sharing a space and the fruit of one's work.

"A Quinta do Chapeleiro" is an artist residency near Evora, Alentejo, that welcomes the artist, the research worker, … anyone who wishes to work while enjoying the countryside and one of the "friendliest cities in the world".

​

Residencies are organized on the basis of a short dossier including a cv, a project description, and by personal recommendations or invitations.

 

"A Quinta do Chapeleiro" can accomodate up to four people simultaneously in comfortable rooms with bathroom.

Transportation should be taken care of by the visitor (prices depend on the time of the year); meals can be prepared in our kitchen or can be had in cheap local restaurants; accomodation (sheets, towels, …) is free of charge. Which does not mean that you should use electricity, water, ... irresponsibly. ;-)

 

But we do expect the visitor to... share... some of his work : for instance, at least one free concert, free lecture, free exhibition... for a week's stay, according to his/her practice, with one of our partners in Evora (Colecçao B, Outro Cinema, Cinema Fora dos Leoes, Direcçao de Cultura Alentejo, ...). If you use digital material, please stick to common European formats (no NTSC, for instance).

As the Portuguese are often polyglots, it is fairly easy to find a common language (English, Spanish, French, ...) and... share with a local audience.
 

Although this is one of the warmest regions of Europe, keep in mind that the climate here is continental : so it may be extremely hot during the day and fresh at night. The rain season starts in December and may last until April. There is air-conditioning. The Quinta is a non-smoking area ! Hundreds of books in French, English, Spanish, Dutch, are available, and you can lie down on a sun lounger, and relax with a good book... or without.

The nearest international airport is Lisbon, although Beja is beginning to develop its connections. There are trains and buses between Lisbon and Evora (approx. 1h30). We can come and fetch you at the bus or train station. But as the quinta is on the countryside, you might want to rent a car, take taxis to go to town... or you will simply have to depend on us...

 

If you are interested in discovering the region, we will be happy to organize a few regional excursions. Remember that if you wish to enjoy a larger degree of autonomy, we recommend hiring a car : there again, prices depend on the time of the year.

From January 1, 2018, donations are welcome for maintenance and functioning costs.
